Voici le dernier chapitre de ma
visite du 17ème Carrefour Européen du Patchwork de Sainte-Marie-Aux-Mines ;
Here is the last chapter of my visit of the 17th European Crossroads of the Patchwork of Sainte-Marie-Aux-Mines; still of the former Australian patchworks of Annette Géro's personal collection, but also some some of my purchases in the commercial space.
With more
than one thousand textile works exposed this year my selection seems very
small, but if it pleases you it will be bigger next year!
Iris
Iris
Isabella Whiteside made two felt quilts for her children and had to send to
Sydney for the wool materials as nothing of the kind was available in what at
that time was a very small country town, miles away by horse and sulky. The
quilts were her orioginal designs and made by her in the late 1920’s.
The quilts
are in Annettes’s new book “Fabric of Society”, together with the pattern for
this quilt. More information about its book here.

The log
cabin with its variations, is one of the more common patterns made by
Australian quilt makers. The pattern may have come from Irish or Scottish
settlers during the gold rush, as the log cabin pattern was extremely common in
the 19th century. Much of the fabric was recycled from the floor of
dressmackers, or in this case from the Hotel floor, showing the recycled use for
cigar box ribbons.
Several of
the pieces of yellow fabric in this quilt have a British coat of arms on them
being a ribbon from a cigar box. The quilt contains over 5000 pieces.

This
unfinished tumbling block quilt is pieced over papers which still remain in the
back of the quilt. Many are hand-written letters which contain dates. One piece
of printed newspaper contains the date “1885”, and the words “Adelaide Millig”
and “3/6 to 3/9”.

Delightful
scenes from 42 different nursery rhymes and children’s’ stories are depicted on
this quilt, such as The Queen of Hearts, Humpty Dumpty, Baa Baa Black Sheep, MaryHad
a Little Lamb, and Cinderella, Including the English book “Ameilia Anne”. Many dress
fabrics have been appliqued on to the quilt using blanket stitch. Many of the
fabrics appear to have had a previous life.

The back
of the quilt is interesting because of the recycled flour bags which were
printed for the Franco-British Exhibition of 1908. The Franco-British Exhibition
(1908) was a large public fair held in London in the early years of the 20th
Century. The exhibition attracted 8 million visitors and celebrated the “Entende
Cordiale” signed in 1904 by the United Kingdom and France.
The Uncle
Tobys Company was originally established in Melburne in 1861 and commenced
manufacturing John Bull Oats. Uncle Toby’s oats won a firts prize at the
Franco-British Exhibition.

Bonjour Evy ,
Oh Dear Evy there is just so many quilts to comment on. Each quilt needs a post of its own. They are all so completely amazing. I so love the cigar silk log cabin quilt in all its simplity yet elegance.
RépondreSupprimerThe nursery rhyme quilt is incredible - so much detail. Just so much to appreciate! And the tumbling blocks quilt with the original newspaper templates still in the quilt.
Those books are so beautiful too - especially the one on roses.

RépondreSupprimerEvy, I have enjoyed every chapter. What a thrill it must have been to see it all in person. I found the tumbling blocks amazing. The paper behind each block really touched me, to think of all the old letters etc still there. Thank you for this wonderful visit through your eyes and photos.
